Craig y Parc School: a special school for disabled children
Curriculum

"Pupils make very good educational progress and develop the skills that they need to move towards greater independence." Estyn 2009
The school focuses on the abilities of each child at every stage of their development, creating a curriculum for all students based on Every Child Matters.
There are five main curriculum areas: Foundation, Primary, Secondary, 14-16 and Post-16. Conductive Education, Sensory. Sensory Movement with Communication are all essential parts of every learning activity. Pupils are supported by highly experienced teachers and learning assistants as well as an on-site team of physical, speech and language, and music therapists; nurses; communication and technology specialists; social care and clinical experts; aroma and hydro therapists.
Targets are set to encourage students toward inclusion in mainstream primary and secondary schools and, wherever possible, a modified National Curriculum is followed to help them towards entry or foundation-level GCSEs.
Craig y Parc works closely with professionals and agencies: recording films, running workshops and recommending equipment and learning styles. Where students are also attending mainstream schools, the Conductive Education team will work with teachers and learning support assistants to ensure the principles are understood and achieved.
Sensory learning
Craig y Parc has developed an extensive, varied curriculum for children with sensory processing difficulties. For many children with cerebral palsy, encouraging the use of touch, sight, hearing or smell can make a significant difference in understanding their world. Class teachers, support assistants and specialist therapists focus on developing pupils’ abilities, particularly in communication, through sensory stimulation.
