Student Independent Advocacy

The independent advocate comes into school once a month during term time.

These regular visits allow her to build up a rapport with the students as they get to know each other. She visits the students who are staying in the residential area, some of whom will be weekly boarders and some will be on overnight stays.

Her role is to be there as a listening ear for any student who would like to talk to someone who is not part of the school staff. This generally means she mingles with the students during the evening and if anyone wants a private chat with her she will find a quiet place where they can do this. If there is anything that she thinks she should advocate for on behalf of the student she will inform a member of staff. Most conversations are of a social nature. She may need a member of staff to help facilitate conversations with pupils with communication difficulties.

Our independent advocate is Marian Edgworth and she works for Action for Children.
