Meldreth Manor: a special school for disabled children
Therapies
All students have provision for therapy from our full-time therapists: Speech and Language, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy. This provision is according to need and to support the requirements of each student's Statement of Educational Need. This therapeutic support is built into every student's personalised timetable and includes Hydrotherapy and Rebound Therapy, both given on site. Read more about our facilities.
We also provide music therapy as appropriate, on a weekly basis and horse riding at our stables on site.
Holistic therapy support
Students' programmes are continued in the Children's Home, when relevant, in the evening and at weekends/holidays. Our Physiotherapist and our Occupational Therapist work across the whole year and so are able to support the children and young people during the holidays.
Wheelchair and splinting clinics
Our therapists run wheelchair and splinting clinics on site and liaise extensively with outside professionals on our students' behalf. When necessary they will discuss with the paediatrician employed to run clinics at school on a frequent basis, and to refer students to other professionals.
Speech and language therapy
Our Speech and Language Therapist is an expert in dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing), which can occur with conditions such as cerebral palsy or other acquired brain injury: any difficulties swallowing food or drink are closely monitored and referred for further investigation as needed. All students have a detailed eating and drinking programme written and monitored by the therapy team.
"The school integrates its education and therapy provision in ways that meet its aim 'To promote the self-esteem and personal autonomy of children and young people who have physical disabilities and complex learning difficulties'." Ofsted November 2010.
