Churchtown day opportunities
Churchtown currently offers a day service to disabled people in Cornwall. Since September, we have been talking with people about how we can take the service forward. Overall, people told us they would like to do a wider range of activities in the community, that Churchtown takes too long to get to and people want to continue the friendships they’ve built through our service.
Churchtown has been an amazing place which lots of people enjoyed in the past, but we want to offer different services where disabled people can do more of what they want closer to home.
We’ve decided to move the service and develop a community hub, possibly in St Austell instead.
More disabled people will be able to participate in community activities they choose, whether that’s photography, cooking, local activity groups or volunteering. We will work with all our customers and staff over the next few months to find out exactly what people want to do, develop a menu of activities and find a local community hub together.
We have also heard from other community, voluntary and education organisations who may be interested in the facilities at Churchtown, so we’re going to keep talking to them about the future of the site. We also want to continue talking to the local authority about ideas for short breaks and independent living experiences.
We’d like to thank everyone who contributed their time and ideas which have helped us make these decisions. We are really excited about being able to offer disabled people more opportunities – but we know that change is still unsettling and we will be doing everything we can to support all service users and staff over the next few months.
