Milton Keynes Resource Centre computer suite
Milton Keynes Resource Centre has a computer suite for disabled people to learn more, write documents or just use the Internet. It has had a few people in charge over the years but in January, Richard Goodger joined as a sponsored volunteer via the Vodafone World of Difference programme.
When Richard’s two-month sponsorship ended, service manager Karen Fairbrother felt that customers had benefitted from Richard’s coaching and guidance and he was recruited by Scope to continue at the centre
Customers said they appreciated this support: Ken said he was grateful for the helpful tips and he really looked forward to his Monday mornings at the suite. Lynda said that she has progressed from worrying about even starting the computer to being proficient in word processing. The comfort in using the computer was helped by provision of a big-button keyboard and trackball mouse. Lynda also now uses email, makes online purchases and is shortly obtaining a computer for home.
Alan is interested in the technology and appreciates the difference between different software such as internet browsers. He has also increased his confidence in using computers more creatively. Alan now edits the Milton Keynes Resource Centre newsletter, which is produced using a desktop publishing package on one of the new computers.
This year the suite has gained two brand-new computers to replace the oldest of the seven machines in use. Additionally, the suite has gained new voice recognition software, which means that customers who can’t use a mouse and keyboard need not be excluded.
