Sharing your icon and story - FAQs

Some common questions about icons and stories are answered below:

Creating an icon and story

How can I get involved?

At Scope, stories and pictures can help us explain why disabled people should have the same choices and opportunities in life as everyone else. We want to know what that looks like to you. You can get involved and share your story at www.scope.org.uk/share

Do we have to choose from the icons on offer or can we create our own or ask for something specific?

There’s lots of ways you can get your Scope icon:

  • pick it – we’ve created some for you to choose from
  • draw it – we love all types of drawing, you can create at www.scope.org.uk/share or you can send us your picture by post or uploading it on our website
  • describe it –download a form at www.scope.org.uk/share to post in your icon idea or upload a description on our website
  • snap it – upload your photo at www.scope.org.uk/share or post it in with our form you can download from our website

Sex is important to me – what icon can I use?

Your Scope icon will help us share your story and will show what you want to be possible in the next few years. It might be something personal to you that represents your relationship, it could be a symbol like a male or female sign, it could be something a bit more romantic like a heart… It can be anything you like as long as it’s not offensive or rude!

I don’t have a story, can I just do a picture?

We love all the pictures we get, but would really like to know how this shows what you’d like to be possible in the next few years. Perhaps you could talk it through with your friends and family. We’d love to hear from you, too. Call us on 0808 800 3333 and we can have a chat about what story you have to share.

I don’t have a picture, can I just do a story?

Yes. We’d love to share your story on our website. If you don’t have an icon, we can create one for you. We’ll use your story to think about what that might be.

Can I tell you a story I’ve heard about?

We want to know your stories. It could be your reaction to something you’ve heard about in the news, from a friend or perhaps something you’ve seen. You could tell us what you’d like to see possible in the future.

Does this cost anything?

Sharing your story and creating your Scope icon won’t cost you a thing. Although, we can’t stop looking at the gallery and reading everyone’s stories, so if you get as inspired as us, it might take up a bit of your time…

Can I upload a picture from a magazine or newspaper?

We only use images that we have permission to use, so we can’t accept a picture that’s a trademark, logo or image that someone else owns.

Are you asking me to think of a story as if I’m a disabled person?

We want everyone involved in Scope to have the opportunity to contribute a story that sums up their personal take on what could be possible. We’re not asking you to make up stories about what they think disabled people might want, nor do we want you to share someone else’s story and experiences. As a disabled person, you might think about what you would personally want to be possible in the future. As a non-disabled person, it may be about how you want society to be different knowing what you do about Scope’s vision, or it could be about your personal experiences with disabled family members or friends.
