Dorothy’s story
"Being a volunteer has changed my life and enriched it."
Dorothy is a familiar face in the Scope Sittingbourne shop. She moved from London to be near her family, and joined the branch as a volunteer 11 years ago on her retirement. Dorothy works at the shop three mornings a week, as she says: “Nice and regular.” Dorothy has arthritis in her arms and legs.
Tell us about yourself
I worked for years in the MOD up at Woolwich Arsenal in the offices up there. Then when we moved down here I worked in the bar at the local college. It was lovely and lots of good memories. I loved the bar where I could talk to all the students and they all knew me. When I was due to retire, I got worried about all the time I would have on my hands, so my friend suggested ringing the manager here. I have been here ever since. I learnt about the charity from working here.
What do you most enjoy about your work at Scope?
Lots of things. I like the customers and the staff. I love talking to the customers and having a bit of a laugh and a joke with them. They all see me in there, and the regular ones always have a chat and joke back.
What has the Scope shop enabled you to do?
Work the till, I suppose. But to be honest, it was more about bringing my experience and sharing it. I like looking at all the clothes on the shop floor and checking they’re all right. I learn about labels and stuff all the time. I’m more aware of recycling now.
What’s the best part of your Scope experience?
When my husband died six years ago I needed something to keep my life normal. That could have been a bad change. But after a little break I carried on coming in here. Being a volunteer has changed my life and enriched it. It keeps me busy and healthy. All that snow stopped me coming in, and I didn’t know what to do with myself. Being out on the floor behind the till – it’s lovely. I get to do a little dance. The customers call me Dottie the Dancing Queen!
If you would like to volunteer, please contact your local shop to discuss your interests and find out which roles are available.
