Gladys Holman House is a residential service in Cornwall provided by Scope in a beautiful Georgian building with extensive grounds.
However, large parts of it are not wheelchair accessible and it does not best meet the needs of the 12 residents.
In line with Scope's vision for disabled people to have choice and control over their lives, the original house has been sold and developed into private apartments to pay for the building costs of new accessible bungalows in the grounds.
In their new bungalows the residents will have their own spacious rooms with en-suite facilities and enjoy easier wheelchair access and greater space.
It becomes very frustrating having to rely on someone else to do basic tasks such as opening your curtains or turning on a light. Environmental controls in each room will mean residents can now open and close their doors, windows and curtains, operate lights, TV, stereo and DVD themselves, giving them greater independence and privacy.
A grant of £20,000 from the Grocers Charity helped to make this possible.
