Joe Barrell

Chair of the Customer and Supporter Committee

Joe has dedicated much of his career to working for social justice, in charities and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), and now through his business, Eden Stanley. Joe brings a breadth of experience in communications, fundraising and popular engagement, developed in executive, leadership, and governance roles over 25 years. After a first career in journalism at Reuters and EMAP, and a spell in digital innovation during the late 90’s dotcom boom, Joe entered the charity sector in 2000.

Joe has worked at the housing charity, Shelter, as Head of Digital, then Head of Communications, and at Save the Children, where he served for five years as Director of Communications. During which time his team revived the organisation’s brand, delivered a global campaign against child mortality, and established it as a leading emergency responder.

For the past five years Joe has worked at Eden Stanley, the agency he founded, providing data, research and strategy to UK charities and NGOs. He brings experience gained from developing communications, fundraising and public affairs strategies for almost 50 organisations.

Joe joined the Board of Trustees at Scope because he was hugely impressed by the quality of our work, and with the boldness of our forward thinking. He became a Trustee to help us take on the fundamental societal and systemic barriers faced by disabled people, and to embrace the opportunities created by new technologies for organising and empowering communities.
