Laura's story

I cannot use public transport because I have Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and it is too tiring, and I cannot walk even short distances to the shop or the post box. I am rightly not entitled to a Motability car, so I depend on running my own car.

I am studying animal behaviour at university and also work part-time in a dry cleaners. If I've been busy during the day, I often can't stand in the kitchen and cook dinner. I depend a lot on pre-prepared foods, which work out more expensive than fresh ingredients. It is a few pounds extra every meal and it means my weekly shop for one person is £50 to £60 - far more than I would like to be spending.

I am lucky that my parents can help me financially, but it is embarrassing to have to ask for money. Before I got ME I was able to live independently and work full-time, and I feel like I have regressed back to childhood now that I am in my 30s.
