Paper petitions often allow you to have direct contact with supporters. You can explain yourself better and encourage people to get more involved in your campaign. Paper petitions are limited in terms of the volume of signatures they allow you to collect. You may have to devote more of your time to collecting signatures.
Online petitions are easier for gathering mass support and reducing the timescales for gathering names. You can also then involve people in spreading the word online. The War on Welfare (WOW) petition is a good example of an online petition that has got mass support. It led to a debate in Parliament calling for a Cumulative Impact Assessment of the effect of cuts on disabled people.
Online petitions are easier to ignore or dismiss. People will often receive many online petition requests. If you choose to do it online make sure yours stands out.
