Paula's story

Paula shares her experiences of extras costs

I have cerebral palsy and I have to pay for extra things to make life easier.

I need to have orthotics in my shoes to stop me from falling over because my movement is difficult, but they’re expensive so I can only afford one pair.

I had a handrail installed on the stairs which helps me when my back goes into spasm – before I would just have to stay upstairs. That cost £100. I’ve got two handrails in the bathroom to help me use the shower. I also have to pay to see a chiropodist. The costs all add up.

I could do with other things, like shoes that would help me walk better, but I can’t afford them. My husband helps with some things, but I don’t want to be looked after.
