Coronavirus: information and updates

A great week’s work

I’m Guy, from Scope’s Support to Work service, and I wanted to show you what one of my weeks looks like. It’s been a busy time, with disabled people 50% more likely to lose their job in the pandemic. Shocking, I know. But your gifts are opening a way back to work...

Monday

I kick off the week with a team video meeting - for the past year, we’ve all been working from home. Over the phone and online, our service supports disabled people to find employment. Demand has grown by 200% during the pandemic, with disabled people far more likely to be made redundant. Thanks to your support, we’re ready to get to work.

Tuesday

I spoke with a woman who lost her job as a PA after 11 years. She ’s disabled and was the only person in her team to be made redundant. Sadly this is a common theme. She was very upset, but your support offered some hope. I worked with her on a plan to find similar roles.

“I was daunted by the prospect of finding a job during a pandemic. After speaking to Scope, I feel much more hopeful.”

- Employment service user.

Wednesday

Today I met with an employer who was keen to hire more disabled people. I told him about how minor changes to the workplace can make a massive difference. The employer took the advice onboard – another example of how you’re making workplaces more inclusive for disabled people.

Thursday

I’ve been supporting an experienced engineer, pushed out of her job because she was disabled. We spent a lot of time talking about how much she had to offer and how to present her skills in interviews. Today I heard she was hired by a top company! It was great to witness the transformation in her confidence, and you made it possible.

Friday

The week ends with another team video meeting. We’ve been overwhelmed by calls and that won’t change any time soon. With your support, we  can meet the increased demand. It’s great to know we’re making a difference in disabled people’s lives.  I hope you know that you’re making a difference too.

“My mental health has improved since I got offered a role with a company who value me – thanks to Scope.”

Every day, I hear the need for your support – from people hitting rock bottom. But I also hear the impact you’re having – every time someone gets in touch, to tell me they’ve been hired. The happiness in their voice says it all – you’re making an incredible difference to many lives. Thank you.
