We are looking for Rights and Contracts Officer to join the BFI on a 12 month fixed term contract, focussing on Replay 2 (the updated BFI National Archive online platform).

Key information

The Rights and Contracts Officer will negotiate, adapt templates, draft contractual provisions, and secure permissions for the renewal of agreements with Regions and Nations Film Archive.  They will generate reports and summaries as requested, enter agreements and record the terms of the renewals on the BFI’s right and royalties database ensuring accurate and up-to-date recording of rights information in relation to all BFI and required third-party collections and activities.  

About the role

  • To negotiate and secure renewals and agreements with the Regional and National Film Archives for BFI platforms. 
  • To negotiate and secure renewals and agreements for the renewal of BFI National Archive titles for BFI platforms. 
  • To generate reports and summaries as requested and enter agreement terms on the Rights and Royalties database and other BFI databases as required in a timely manner and to ensure that terms and exploitation are captured accurately. 
  • Carry out copyright and rights research and ‘due diligence’ and record rights information on BFI databases in line with BFI data standards and to create and maintain clear and comprehensive files, summaries and reports relating to such research.

Requirements

  • Demonstrable knowledge of: copyright law and principles, film and television rights and contracts (including music and guild or union matters), working with other IP rights, rights clearance and research.  
  • An understanding of potential copyright, licensing and risk issues with mass digitisation.  
  • Strong research skills; ability to formulate and carry out an effective search strategy.  
  • Proven experience of using a rights database or cataloguing system and recording and or correcting information in such systems.
