First Response Training is looking for someone with a learning disability or who is autistic to become an expert with lived experience co-trainer.

(It is a part-time position on a 0 hour contract, based on clients requirements within your travel remit.)

Key information

The role is to train people who work in health and social care about learning disabilities and autism. The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism." It was created to help avoid tragic events like the one that happened to Oliver McGowan, who was autistic and had a learning disability and unfortunately died in a hospital. The training aims to improve understanding and support for people with learning disabilities and autism.

About the role

What the Training Includes:

  • Understanding learning disability and autism
  • Making reasonable adjustments to support people
  • Supporting people with a learning disability or autism, including those with mental health conditions
  • Effective communication with people with a learning disability or autism
  • Supporting young people with a learning disability

Your Role:

  • Work with other trainers to deliver the training, both online and in person
  • Participate in meetings and training to improve your skills
  • Share your experiences of living with a learning disability or being autistic
  • Make people feel welcome and answer questions about your life
  • Be organised and prepared for your work
  • Support your team and help new colleagues

Who You Will Work With:

  • Other trainers and office staff
  • Health and social care professionals like doctors, nurses, and care workers

Support:

First Response Training will provide training to help you do the job and make any necessary adjustments to support you.

Eligibility: The role is open to anyone with a learning disability or who is autistic, regardless of location within the UK. 

Hours and Rate: Each Tier 2 training session involves 3 hours of delivery time, with a pay rate of £20 per hour. Each Tier 1 training session involves 1.5 hours delivery time, with a pay rate of £20 per hour.

Training Provided:

    • Tier 1 Co-Trainers: To become a Tier 1 co-trainer, you will need to:
      • Complete the free NHS e-learning (link below).
      • Attend a Tier 1 session, as an observer.
      • Participate in a group session or one on one with our Lead Trainer to go through scripts and questions.
      • After these steps, you will be ready to deliver the 1-hour virtual session.
    • Tier 2 Co-Trainers: To become a Tier 2 co-trainer, you will need to:
      • Complete the free NHS e-learning.
      • Attend a Tier 2 session, as an observer (virtually or face-to-face).
      • Have a 1-on-1 session with our Lead Trainer to prepare slides, prompt words, or scripts for your section.
      • After completing all sessions, a meeting will be organised with all attendees to discuss the next steps of the training.

Requirements

  • Have a learning disability or be an autistic person
  • Comfortable speaking in front of people and listening to them
  • Willing to learn how to deliver the training
  • Organised and able to manage your time
  • Able to use computers and travel to different places within your region

Helpful Skills (not required):

  • Experience sharing ideas in front of others
  • Confidence using online tools like Microsoft Teams
  • Ability to handle some pressure
  • Experience working respectfully and politely with others
  • Previous experience in training, health or social care, or working in a team
