Key information

As a Family Support Worker, you will work as one of the PACT Family team, you will be based primarily in the prison's visitor centre and visits hall providing support, advice and guidance to families visiting prisoners, facilitating prison visits and family days and supporting the play service.

A sessional Family Support Worker provides support to families visiting loved ones in the Visitor Centre. Visitor centre services include play and children’s services; and a catering service.

About the role

  • To offer a friendly and welcoming environment within the Visitors Centre, where people visiting the prison, can spend time before and after their visit during agreed opening times.
  • To assist with booking in including encouraging families to access support for their needs by interacting with visitors, offering information and advice as appropriate on a confidential basis.
  • To provide an excellent, friendly and welcoming refreshment service to prisoners and their families in the prison visits hall and Visits Centre.
  • To liaise with prison staff, including visits and security staff to ensure close co-operation in the smooth and efficient reception of visitors at the prison.
  • To develop an area in the visitors' centre and visits hall for children which may include displays of children’s artwork, relevant posters and information, as well as toys and other materials to engage children before and after a visit.

Requirements

  • Clear understanding of professional boundaries which will enable you to work with prisoners and their families.
  • Good understanding of safeguarding.
  • Good understanding of confidentiality and data protection.
  • Experience of working in a team and also of using own initiative with limited supervision. 
  • Knowledge and experience of good practice in promoting diversity and making services accessible to all.
  • The ability to offer a warm welcome to visitors, to smile and treat people with dignity and respect.
  • Ability to work in a challenging environment and remain calm.
