The New Museum project will transform the museum, Smithfield and the City of London, creating a new cultural quarter for London. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a new high-impact Exhibitions and Productions team and play a central role in one of Europe’s largest cultural projects. In 2026, the new London Museum will open Phase 1 in the General Market and West Poultry Avenue. A series of galleries and programmable spaces will host changing spotlight exhibitions and displays, including the Vaults that will host immersive exhibitions and experiences within its atmospheric labyrinth.

Key information

We have embarked on an extraordinary journey to create a new museum for London. The museum will sit in atmospheric former market buildings (over 30,000 sqm ) at the heart of one of the capital’s most historic quarters.

About the role

  • To play a pivotal and proactive role in the strategic development of the exhibitions
    programme, in line with Museum’s vision and objectives.
  • To work closely with Director of Transformation & Director of Content to develop a creative
    and inspiring programme of major exhibitions.
  • To lead, manage and deliver the Museum’s major temporary exhibitions programme including installations, commissions and rotating displays at Smithfield and Docklands. To build, recruit and develop a new exhibitions and production team  that has the necessary talent, skills and capacity to deliver a world class programme.
  • To be the principal budget holder for the department and the exhibitions and production programme.
  • To develop the business case proposal and associated commercial, models working closely with the Director of Transformation and Director Enterprise and Experience.
  • Work closely with the Head of Design to ensure our design principles and creative strategy for our Major exhibitions and all programmable spaces are aligned with our 5-year rolling programme, enabling our strategic vision and priorities to be delivered.
  • Work closely with Head of Curatorial and Senior Exhibitions Lead to ensure content ideas and narratives for exhibition proposals are progressed as required to deliver a five-year programme and that also aligns with our research centre objectives.
  • Work closely with fundraising, finance and commercial teams to develop robust business case for each exhibition proposal.
  • To develop and maintain partnerships and relationships with external organisations, lenders and institutions to support and deliver our exhibitions programme.
  • Setup exhibition project teams cross Museum and with external designers and consultants as required. Lead and motivate these teams to develop and shape the content, design and narrative for each exhibition, working alongside heads of department. Teams will include exhibition curators, audience and interpretation leads, content and curatorial, and design teams.
  • To lead and manage the planning and delivery of temporary exhibitions, spotlight exhibition, rotating displays and commissions.
  • To ensure exhibitions are coordinated across the Museum and wider public programme, to enable income and quality targets to be met.
  • To ensure the production of high quality, consistent project briefs taking into account Museum’s objectives, including timing, budgets, audiences, interpretation and design.
  • To have overall responsibility for exhibition and associated budgets, in line with relevant targets and exhibition planning process.

Requirements

  • Substantial management and leadership experience of developing and delivering high
    impact exhibitions, preferably in a museum or gallery.
  • Strong programme management skills, with the ability to develop detailed plans of work,
    manage programmes and budgets, and hold teams accountable to ensure successful delivery
    of complex project and business outcomes.
  • Excellent facilitation and influencing skills to delivery creative interventions in a complex
    organisation.
  • Proven track record of developing successful relationships with external partners, lenders
    or institutions.
  • Proven high level communication skills with the ability to articulate complex issues clearly
    and achieve buy-in.
  •  Well-developed skills in preparing and presenting proposals and project briefs and appointing
    and managing contractors and consultants within the context of a creative, exhibition or
    interpretation project.
  • Experience or good awareness of how to create or maintain a positive working
    environment while working to deadlines and in a fast-paced environment or when joining an
    established team or during a period of change.
  • Experience of line managing (or supervising), motivating and developing staff including
    involvement in recruitment, induction, training and performance management.
