Historic England has a fantastic opportunity for you to join us as our Principal Inspector (Government Historic Estates Unit - GHEU).

The location of this role is London, inclusive with hybrid working.

About the role

  • To take responsibility for fostering and maintaining relationships with key partners across the government estate and with Parliament and the Royal Household, to advise and support, including through local authorities, on the strategic planning and implementation of sustainable change.
  • To lead on particularly complex or sensitive casework or projects or, as appropriate, to support and advise others in this role, as well as on other casework as required, delivering or guiding the delivery of advice to agreed timescales and to excellent customer service standards.
  • To take a leading role on a programme of work aimed at improving the Government's care of its historic estate, ranging from biennial reporting on its condition, to the development and implementation of policies for disposals.
  • To take a leading role in matters relating to Urgent Crown Development.
  • To contribute to the development of expertise, knowledge and skills in your areas of specialism across Historic England.
  • To support the delivery of Group and corporate activities, including supporting activities such as capacity building, as agreed with line management.

Requirements

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant subject
  • A proven track record of working constructively with Local Planning Authorities, government stakeholders and other organisations and community groups.
  • Experience of balancing the interests of the historic environment in relation to other issues.
  • Advanced, specialist knowledge in a specific field relevant to the post or the locality.
  • An excellent understanding of the management of historic buildings and conservation areas through the planning system and parallel regulatory systems, and of the legislative and policy context at both the strategic and local level and of its role in the sustainable management of the historic environment.
  • Advanced communication and diplomacy skills (written and oral).
  • Excellent negotiating and influencing skills.
