Key information

BMW Group believes in creating an environment where apprentices can truly learn and develop during their time with the company. Experts and mentors treat apprentices as part of the team from day one, encouraging them to bring their own ideas to the table and providing opportunities to demonstrate their potential.

About the role

The BMW Group offers an enhanced Level 6 degree apprenticeship, commencing end of August 2026, in Manufacturing Engineering (BEng (Hons), fully funded by the business. This will take place alongside the development of specialist technical knowledge, covering state-of-the-art automotive production technology, innovations in manufacturing techniques, and training in areas such as Electrical Control, PLC systems and robotics automation, Integrated Process Planning, IT and database systems, Quality Control, and Production Validation.

Year-on-Year Progression

The four-year programme enables apprentices to experience different aspects of engineering and production technology, including hand skills, machining, fluid power, electronics, robotics, control systems, and more. Training takes place at Plant Hams Hall and a local college, with a strong focus on quality aspects of production, including measurement and calibration, quality management systems, preventative quality, process capability, engine performance testing, and effective problem solving.

The first year is focused on a learning environment, completing academic requirements of the engineering mechatronic-based BTEC NC and a practical-based engineering programme covering core engineering skills such as milling and turning, hand skills, electrical and electronic circuits, control and fluid power, and PLCs.

Following this, apprentices undertake competency-based training on site and progress through the foundation degree, completing the full degree by the end of the apprenticeship. Quality Engineering Technicians will experience a broad spectrum of placements throughout the business, including:

  • Complete manufacturing analysis
  • Engine performance testing
  • Supplier liaison / problem solving
  • Siemens PLC with automation
  • Robotic facilities
  • Manufacturing process and facility planning (electrical and mechanical)
  • Software integration
  • Metrology – computer-aided measurement and analysis
  • Supply and vehicle build planning (logistics)
  • Launch planning / control manufacturing system interfaces

Placements provide insight into the business while carrying out relevant projects alongside study. Apprentices will gain further practical experience by joining the Quality Engineering team in a permanent role, ensuring the technology within the business remains state-of-the-art.
