Key information

You will manage the effective delivery of Amgueddfa Cymru’s loans programmes, inward and outward, in accordance with Museum policy and procedures, and to national and international museum standards.

About the role

  • To manage the processes and logistics integral to the loans programme and to ensure that Amgueddfa Cymru’s national and international profile is enhanced through active engagement with partners and efficient delivery of the programme. 
  • To apply the appropriate risk management principles to ensure the safeguarding of the collections and to manage risks to objects on loan. 
  • To ensure due diligence in the treatment and movement of objects under the care of Amgueddfa Cymru, ensuring compliance obligations are met and maintained.
  • To review and update current policy and procedure, as appropriate, and to promote registrarial best practice across the organisation.
  • To ensure appropriate import/export arrangements are in place, incuding the management of cultural export licences, immunity from seizure cover, customs procedures, and security clearance; as appropriate. 
  • To oversee the negotiation of terms and conditions for loans and to manage associated contracts with specialist transport companies / couriers, as required.

The Museum has an important role to play within the visual arts ecology of Wales. Working with other museums and galleries, the Registrar will actively contribute to supporting the growth of a vibrant and closely knit community and build on the existing principles of collaboration and partnership delivery. Integral to this, is Amgueddfa Cymru’s role as a lead partner for CELF, the national contemporary art gallery Wales initiative.

To support exhibitions and displays through the negotiation of loan conditions and the facilitation of loan contracts, transport and insurance. Facilitate courier arrangements.

Manage Government Indemnity applications, working closely with Welsh Government colleagues. Ensure other insurance requirements are assessed and met, negotiating terms of contract, as appropriate.

Active collections management duties are integral to all aspects of the role, working with Amgueddfa Cymru’s Collections Management System. Working closely with curatorial, conservation and technical colleagues across departments will ensure that collections management responsibilities are fulfilled.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive understanding of national and international standards for transport, packing, handling and environmental requirements of museum objects.
  • Knowledge of Government Indemnity and commercial insurance.
  • Experience of working with fine art transport agents.
  • An expert in collection management and the application of this to facilitating the sharing of collections.
  • Keeps up-to-date and is knowledgeable about recent and ongoing developments in collection management practice, as applicable to this position, and is able to interpret and apply this knowledge in practice and to support the development of best practice.
