Midlands Arts Centre (MAC) is an exciting, ambitious arts centre which offers a wide array of free exhibitions, theatre, music, cinema and comedy performances as well as creative learning and participation activities. Well-loved and well used, it's a relaxed friendly place attracting a diverse mix of visitors.We are recruiting for a Shift Leader to join our busy Catering department on a variable hours contract. Please note that working hours on weekends and evenings.

Key information

To ensure the smooth running of the restaurant and other service areas. This will involve supporting the management team in offering a great customer experience in the restaurant, express kiosk, bar and for events and conferences throughout the building.

About the role

Operational Duties

  • Ensure the smooth running of the restaurant and all other service areas including any pop-up tills or concessions. Includes opening and closing of service areas, checking, and receiving deliveries, issuing floats, cashing up and completing all relevant records as required.
  • Ensuring all food and beverages on sale and display are fully stocked to the correct standard and attractively presented at all times in a clean and tidy environment.
  • Operating the till correctly, to handle cash and card payments
  • Preparing and delivering catering requirements for corporate events when required.
  • Ensure the EPOS system is being used correctly and assist catering CSAs with this.
  • To communicate effectively within the food and beverage and customer service areas and within other departments

Customer Service

  • To ensure excellent customer service to MAC customers and staff.
  • Handling customer issues and complaints to the best of your ability in the first instance and to report to the Duty Manager any customer complaints or discrepancies that you cannot deal with, always putting customer satisfaction first.
  • Monitoring product quality and reporting any issues to Head of Catering Operations or Catering Manager.
  • Monitoring the behaviour of customers to ensure that this is acceptable at all times and report any problems to Duty Managers or Head of Catering Operations.

Staff Management

  • Directing, informing, and working with the catering staff in their duties for the shift.
  • Act as first point of contact for staff and issues that they may have during their shift.
  • Assisting with induction training of new staff and ongoing training for existing team.
  • To assist where requested in the scheduling of staff.
  • To ensure staff are well presented and follow the correct uniform regulations.
  • Help maintain a high level of morale in the service areas

Health and Safety

  • Maintain accurate HACCP, COSHH and all other documentation need to keep MAC compliant.
  • To assist in responsibly ensuring the hygiene, cleanliness and health and safety of the service areas.
  • To ensure that stock is rotated, labelled and stored in compliance with food hygiene procedures.
  • To comply with all fire and safety regulations acting as a Fire Marshall during an evacuation.
  • To maintain operational procedures, including practices as stipulated by Environmental Health and Weights and Measures
  • To implement and follow strict rules on personal hygiene.
  • As required help maintain all records relating to deliveries and storage of stock

Requirements

(You should meet most of these requirements)

  • Experience of working in a busy restaurant or bar.
  • Cash handling and working with an EPOS system.
  • Basic food hygiene knowledge
  • Ability to work under pressure in a busy environment. Strong multitasking skills.
  • Able to prioritise and delegate effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills, personable and able to inspire a team.
  • Friendly and personable.
  • Reliable and hardworking.
  • Flexible- able to work evenings, weekends, Bank Holidays.

Desirable

(You should meet some of these requirements)

  • Food Hygiene Level 2 certificate (mac can provide training otherwise)
  • Experience of working in a multifunctional venue with several catering outlets.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Previous experience of cashing up.
  • Working knowledge of managing within Health and Safety, Hygiene, Food Safety and Premises Licensing laws.
  • Barista skills.
  • Bar work experience.
  • Interested in current trends in catering and hospitality. An interest in a variety of art forms and MAC as a venue and charity.
  • Able to motivate and inspire a team.
