Piers story

Piers shares his experience of extra costs

My life is much more expensive because I use a wheelchair.

I had to pay for my wheelchair myself and it cost over £4,800. I continue to spend about £300 a month just to maintain it due to wear and tear.

I’m a student and the only accessible student housing available is £110 per week, whilst friends of mine pay as little as £40 a week for similar housing.

Due to the unreliability of public transport, I spend about £400 a month on taxis.

I need to buy pre-chopped food or small quantities because it's really difficult to manage more than a small basket of items. This can increase my monthly bill by an extra £150. Also, with many shops being inaccessible, I have to order a lot of items online and pay for these to be delivered.
