"A fair future is a future without prejudice"

“There are still too many people who treat us like we’re aliens from another planet.”

72-year-old Barbara lives with cerebral palsy. She first experienced prejudice in the school playground, and it’s something she has faced many times since; in the workplace, in shops, at train stations and even in her local hospital.

I’ve been called names. I’ve been labelled. I’ve been held back at work. Me and my friends were discriminated against because we were from ‘that weird college up the road’, which was in fact a Scope training college.

Every time Barbara experiences discrimination and inequality, she tackles it head on. She speaks out in the hope she can change people’s attitudes. That’s why she has pledged a gift to Scope in her Will, so that Scope can continue to fight prejudice and injustice after she’s gone.

Barbara believes that a fair future for all disabled people is possible. However, changing people’s attitudes remains the biggest challenge.

There are still people who will cross the street when they see me coming. And still people who will talk to me loudly and slowly, even though I’m not deaf.
