"I'd like more disabled people in top jobs"

Emilia is a big Manchester United fan. Of course, she loves it when the reds win, but what inspires her most about football are values like teamwork, never giving up and a determination to win.

There are teams that will never give up and keep pushing. And then you also hear about underdogs fighting for their place.

Emilia has had to overcome a lot of barriers, discrimination and self-doubt, but she’s not going to be defined or held back by visual impairment. Determined to get into work, she reached out to Scope’s Support to Work service.

I can’t thank my Scope adviser enough, he gave me my confidence back. Because of Scope’s Support to Work service, I have found a career path that suits the kind of person I am.

Emilia has since found a job she loves as a civil servant with the Cabinet Office.

I’ve worked with my manager and the Reasonable Adjustments team. They have been very supportive in making sure I have a large computer screen and any printed materials are in a large font size on yellow paper.

But Emilia’s not stopping there. She holds a Master’s degree in criminal psychology and is studying to be a solicitor. As she says,

I want to fight for people’s rights.

Emilia wants a future where disabled people have the same opportunities as anyone else in the workplace and most of all she’d love to see more disabled people hold top jobs.

Seeing disabled people in those top jobs would show the younger generation that no matter what your disability, you can aim high.
