Role purpose

The purpose of this role is to make sure accessibility and disability inclusion are built into everything the organisation does.

The Accessibility and Disability Inclusion Specialist will be a central point of expertise. They will help teams to design and deliver content, services, communications and environments that are accessible and inclusive. They will also work towards building greater accountability for accessibility across teams over time.

The role takes a strategic approach to training and other activity to help create an inclusive workplace. The approach is grounded in the social model of disability. It combines strong technical knowledge of accessibility with the ability to build relationships and influence others. The specialist will work well with a wide range of stakeholders.

Embed accessibility across the organisation

  • Champion accessibility and inclusive design at all levels
  • Support teams to proactively identify and remove barriers for disabled people
  • Ensure accessibility is considered in policies, programmes, services and communications

Act as a centre of excellence

  • Provide expert advice and practical guidance on accessibility and disability inclusion
  • Support colleagues with accessibility in digital content, documents, events and services
  • Promote best practice aligned to WCAG and inclusive design

Design and deliver training

  • Deliver Disability Equality Training and other core learning offers
  • Design and develop new accessible training sessions
  • Tailor and co-produce bespoke training for internal teams

Develop and implement strategy

  • Create and deliver a strategic plan to move the organisation from awareness to accountability
  • Use data, insight and feedback to identify priorities and measure progress
  • Embed clear expectations, governance and accountability for accessibility

Build relationships and influence change

  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders across teams
  • Work collaboratively to influence inclusive decision-making
  • Engage with external accessibility communities and partners

Develop tools and resources

  • Create toolkits, guidance and practical resources to support colleagues

Person specification

Knowledge and experience

Essential

  • Strong knowledge of accessibility standards and best practice
  • Experience reviewing content, documents and services for accessibility
  • Experience designing and delivering engaging training sessions and workshops
  • Experience supporting organisations to improve accessibility and inclusion
  • Understanding of the Equality Act 2010 and it’s application
  • Experience working collaboratively across to teams to influence change
  • Experience using accessibility tools

Desirable

  • Experience developing strategic plans or organisational change programmes
  • Understanding of monitoring, evaluation and impact measurement
