Job description

Role purpose

The Engagement Manager plays a vital role in delivering Scope’s ambition to grow a movement for social change.

This role provides strategic direction and oversight for Scope’s work to amplify the voices of disabled people through events and activations, storytelling, and high-profile supporters.

Leading a cross-functional team of 4, the Engagement Manager is responsible for shaping and delivering a cohesive engagement strategy, with a focus on fostering meaningful engagement with our brand, mission, and initiatives. Through events, campaigns, and ongoing work with supporters.

The role leads the design and execution of complex, cross-organisational engagement events and programmes including International Day of Disabled People and Disability Pride Month.

Strategy

  • Develop a cross-organisational engagement strategy and lead a multi-functional team in its execution.
  • Identify and implement new goal-driven engagement opportunities.
  • Review the performance, opportunities and risks of: existing engagement events and activations, and ongoing work with celebrities and storytellers.
  • Lead and develop an innovative engagement programme to maximise relationships.  
  • Support the team to develop and embed a high-impact celebrity and influencer engagement strategy across the organisation.

Relationship management and stewardship

  • Manage and oversee a team responsible for building, nurturing and maintaining strong relationships with celebrities, influencers, and storytellers.
  • Leverage goal-driven events and activations to engage new and existing audiences, and provide an excellent experience working and interacting with Scope.
  • Work with teams across Scope to develop audience journeys and communications, which align with our goals.

Event and project management

  • Lead on the planning and delivery of major engagement events. 
  • Project and programme manage a wide range of engagement events and activations, such as Disability Pride Month.
  • Subject matter expert on accessible events, meeting the wide-ranging requirements of our guests and advising teams within Scope and partner organisations.
  • Manage external agencies and relationships with partners and suppliers, including effective negotiation.
  • Identify, monitor and mitigate risks associated with engagement events and activations.

Budgeting and reporting

  • Responsible for setting and managing expenditure budgets for cross-organisational engagement programmes.
  • Working with teams across Scope to identify ways to grow associated income.
  • Set, track, measure, and report on the impact of engagement strategies and events, providing insights for continuous improvement.

Leadership

  • Lead and support a high-performing team to deliver against objectives.
  • Ensure processes and ways of working are established to support the team in achieving project goals and ambitions.
  • Inspire and motivate line reports to grow and develop in their roles. Seek opportunities for learning and development and encourage a culture of continual improvement.

Collaboration

  • Collaborating with colleagues to identify and design highly engaging and storytelling-driven events.
  • Work strategically with the wider Communications team, Brand and Marketing to integrate celebrities, influencers, and storytellers into campaigns, social media initiatives, advocacy and fundraising activities.
  • Provide your expert engagement, events and project management advice to colleagues as necessary. 
  • Work alongside colleagues to refine and develop an impactful supporter journey and engagement process.

Person specification

Knowledge and experience

Essential

  • Experience in leading innovative and impactful engagement strategies and activities.
  • Experience in relationship management, talent and/or influencer engagement, storytelling, or a related field.
  • Significant experience of project management, with evidence of leading cross organisational teams on the development and delivery of projects.  
  • Substantial experience in the organisation and delivery of large-scale live and digital events.  
  • Experience of working with agencies and multiple external stakeholders to deliver complex projects.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, including experience in managing and motivating a team.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how to deliver highly accessible live and digital events.  
  • Knowledge and extensive experience of risk management and mitigation.  
  • Experience of setting, managing, negotiating and reporting against a budget.  
  • Experience of measuring and evaluating impact of projects.
  • Experience of working with and managing senior stakeholders, both internally and externally.

Desirable  

  • Lived experience of disability.  
  • Demonstrable understanding of the social model of disability.  
  • Existing network of celebrities, influencers, and industry professionals.
  • Good knowledge of the voluntary sector.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and sustain a variety of relationships.
  • Experience in event planning and execution, especially with VIPs and high-profile talent.
  • Excellent negotiating and influencing skills.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with communications, brand and content teams to integrate storytelling into campaigns.
  • A strong team player, able to build and maintain relationships and resolve conflict where necessary.
